“There is only one thing
worse than someone who doesn’t like to get down… Someone
who only likes to get down to one type of music!”
Commanding Thursday nights at the Rooftop Bar at the trendy Standard
Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles where she spins it all – from
hip-hop to soul classics, house, dancehall, reggaeton y poco salsa,
Valida “not only has the skillz to pay the bills, but the
looks to back it up.” (Jointz mag.) In June 2005, LA.com has
named her one of the “Hottest Nightlife Personalities”
in Los Angeles.
Originally from Sarajevo, Valida emigrated to the United States
to pursue higher education. Completing a bachelor’s degree
in World Arts and Cultures (1999) and a master’s degree in
Dance Ethnography and Video Production (2001), Valida has always
been in pursuit of expressing her love for music, dance, and visual
arts.
In late 2001, after the release of Concentric Beats, her feature
documentary “love-letter to the drum’n’bass scene”
(URB mag) Valida co-founded what XLR8R Magazine aptly described
as “one of the most righteous weekly club spots in town”
Proper* at Hollywood’s Star Shoes. For three years, Proper
promoted a diverse mix of music, both classic and new and featured
local DJ resident heroes: Coleman, Rashida, Azul, Paris, Phers1,
and MCs Kemst, Ghost and singer Mia Victoria.
From guest appearances at Miami’s Winter Music Conference,
Budoir in Dubai, Nuphoria event in Tokyo, Candela Party in Puerto
Rico, Mexico’s Organic Party, and her native Bosnia, Valida
has shared decks all across the globe with the likes of Madlib,
PBW, J-Rocc, DJ Mitsu, Yam Who?, Domu, Quantic, Seiji, Afronaught,
Osunlade, Vikter Duplaix, Dixon, Jurgen (Jazzanova), Dj Language,
John Beltran, John Arnold, Mark Ronson, Paris’ DJ Yellow…
etc…
Having already graced the pages of URB, Fader, XLR8R, BPM, Lucky
Magazine, Lemonade, Music Connection to name a few, Valida was featured
on Los Angeles’ own 89.9 KCRW as part of Chocolate City’s
“Unsung Heroes” program hosted by Garth Trinidad that
aired live on December 1, 2004. http://www.kcrw.org/archive.html
